The author, Mathuram Bhoothalingam, takes the reader on a journey of
fantasy through the eyes of a small girl, Soumani, into the world of
Gods. The elephant headed god of wisdom, Ganesa, is her guide. One by
one she meets the gods of Indra’s heaven and Ganesa tells her of how
they have come to be what they are. The stories, imbued with the view of
life in Vedic times, are fascinating to read. Children of Soumani’s age
(9 to 12) will find them enthralling.
The illustrator, Vaijayanti Ranade, has fully captured the mood. The
fiery horse, the tender scene with Yama and the pathetic story of
Sunashepa, add to the charm of the moving tales.
