No other state in the Indian Union has a long and continuous painting
tradition as Tamil Nadu. The book takes the reader along a journey of a
study of the paintings from pre-historic times to the 20th century; from
cave art in dense jungles to temples that were royal undertakings and
temples in remote villages; to collections buried in dusty archives and
to those in well-known museums. The book includes, for the first time,
paintings that have been scraped away from the walls and ceilings of
some temples. Based on impeccable research and sumptuously produced with
illustrations and colour plates, the book presents a comprehensive
history of painting in Tamil Nadu.
